Volunteering

Volunteering at HRPA is a rewarding membership experience and volunteers are critical to the association’s continued success.

With the expertise and involvement of members, we create awareness of workplace issues, promote excellence in human resources management practices and provide services that support the HR community, knowledge-sharing and continuous professional development.

About Leadership

Shawna-Bourke-Heimpel
Shawna Bourke-Heimpel, CHRL

Chapter Chair

Shawna Bourke-Heimpel is an energetic and passionate HR profession with over 10 years of experience supporting both the financial services and technology industries. She is currently the Human Resources Manager for Lackner McLennan Insurance Ltd and their sister company Erb and Erb Insurance Brokers. She currently holds her Certified Human Resources Leader designation.

Shawna has also been an active member of the Grand Valley Human Resources Professional Association including volunteering in a number of roles within chapter. Shawna has been on the board of directors since 2013 both filling the role of Director at Large (Volunteer Management) and is currently on the executive as secretary.  She has also chaired the Peer Networking groups and led the Recruitment Peer Networking group in the past.

Outside of the HRPA, Shawna has also volunteered with Women of Waterloo Region (WOW) and the Ontario Technology and Skills Competition.

Darren-Becks
Darren Becks, CHRL

Chapter Past Chair

Darren has nearly 25 years of service in post-secondary education administration and has held increasing levels of leadership over that period. Currently Darren is the Associate Vice President, Operations at Conestoga College.

Darren is a Lean champion who advocates for innovative ideas and continues to guide the Operations team through their Lean journey by leading the discovery and application of resources and tools to achieve operational excellence and team effectiveness.

Erin Poirier, CHRL

Chapter Secretary/Treasurer

I am presently the Vice President of Human Resources, Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc.  I have been a member of GVHRPA for over 10 years.  I bring over 12 years of progressive HR experience in the Insurance and Healthcare fields with strengths in leadership, employee relations, and compensation & benefits areas.  I hold a bachelor’s degree from the University of Waterloo, an HR diploma from Humber College, the Certified Human Resources Leader designation from HRPA as well as the Certified Risk Manager Designation. I am currently completing an MBA through the University of Fredericton.

Nancy-Lau
Nancy Lau, CHRL

Chair, Chapter Communications Committee

Nancy has worked as a Bilingual Human Resources Advisor with the Public Service Alliance of Canada since 2010 and has extensive experience in recruitment, compensation, job evaluation, training, employee and labour relations, HRIS design and implementation, health and safety and employment equity.

Nancy graduated with an Honours degree from the University of Guelph and went on to obtain a Human Resources Management Post-Graduate Diploma from George Brown College.  In addition to her CHRL designation, she is pursuing her Certified Compensation Professional designation.

Nancy currently sits on the HRPA Registration Committee and HRPA Professional Developmental Advisory Panel.  She also previously participated on the Ottawa Chapter Mentoring Committee and was a former member of the Toronto, Kingston and Ottawa HRPA Chapters.

Margaret-Sullivan
Margaret Sullivan Williams, CHRL

Chair, Chapter Programs/Professional Development Committee

Margaret’s 15+ years as an accomplished human resources business leader included managing the day to day delivery of operational HR activities, leading and participating on international project teams with business leaders and consultants, and advising business owners, leaders and executives.  An independent human resources consultant since 2011, Margaret’s offerings include organizational development, conflict resolution, career coaching and mentoring, best practice analysis and recommendations, and structural human resources program development and implementation.

Margaret is passionate about creating an engaged environment at work that fosters personal and organizational growth. She does her best work helping individuals at every business level maximize their contributions and reach their goals so that quality of work and quality of life can be successfully achieved. She has served on the HRPA Grand Valley Board of Directors as Director of Professional Development since 2015.

Kathryn-Meehan
Kathryn Meehan

Chair, Chapter Mentorship Committee

Kathryn Meehan is an employment and labour lawyer at Hicks Morley’s Waterloo office. Kathryn represents clients before the courts and administrative tribunals, including the Human Rights Tribunal, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act Tribunal and the Ontario Labour Relations Board. She practices in all areas of labour and employment law, advising a wide variety of public and private sector clients. She also works with clients to ensure best practices, delivers training and provides advice on a pro-active basis before it becomes necessary to exercise her advocacy skills.

Kathryn graduated as the gold medalist from the LL.B program at the University of Western Ontario and subsequently obtained her LL.M from the University of Cambridge, England. Prior to joining Hicks Morley, Kathryn completed her Master’s of Industrial Relations at Queen’s University and subsequently worked and taught in the field of human resources. Kathryn spent her articling year as a Clerk at the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Beatriz-Millon
Beatriz Millon

Chair, Chapter Student Liaison Committee

Beatriz Millon is a graduate of Conestoga College and specializes in human resources management. Her professional and volunteer background includes human resources, business administration, project management, and corporate communications. She is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.

Prior to joining the Board of Directors, she held various volunteer positions from the Human Resources Professionals Association – Grand Valley Chapter, Human Resources Professionals Association, Canadian Cancer Society (Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation), Canadian Red Cross, and Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
