Volunteering

Volunteering at HRPA is a rewarding membership experience and volunteers are critical to the association’s continued success.

With the expertise and involvement of members, we create awareness of workplace issues, promote excellence in human resources management practices and provide services that support the HR community, knowledge-sharing and continuous professional development.

HRPA members and students are involved in a variety of volunteer service opportunities including:

About Leadership

Shawna-Bourke-Heimpel
Shawna Bourke-Heimpel, CHRL

Chapter Chair

Shawna Bourke-Heimpel is an energetic and passionate HR profession with over 10 years of experience supporting both the financial services and technology industries. She is currently the Human Resources Manager for Lackner McLennan Insurance Ltd and their sister company Erb and Erb Insurance Brokers. She currently holds her Certified Human Resources Leader designation.

Shawna has also been an active member of the Grand Valley Human Resources Professional Association including volunteering in a number of roles within chapter. Shawna has been on the board of directors since 2013 both filling the role of Director at Large (Volunteer Management) and is currently on the executive as secretary. She has also chaired the Peer Networking groups and led the Recruitment Peer Networking group in the past.

Outside of the HRPA, Shawna has also volunteered with Women of Waterloo Region (WOW) and the Ontario Technology and Skills Competition.

Hosherdar Polad

Chair, Chapter Mentorship

Hosherdar Polad has a Bachelor’s in Financial Markets and a Master’s in Business Management majoring in Human Resources from the University of Mumbai. He also has a Human Resources Management certification from Conestoga Business School and several years of human resource experience under his belt.

Hosherdar is passionate about sustainable development and giving back to the community. He is the current chair of the art and culture advisory committee for the City of Kitchener. He also sits on the national executive board of CISV Canada as the communications chair.

In his free time, he loves to spend time with his wife and dog and to go on long strolls. Gardening and cooking especially with eggs run in his blood. He is passionate about the postal system and sending snail mail and collecting stamps from all over the world.

Darren-Becks
Darren Becks, CHRL

Chair, Chapter Programs/Professional Development

Darren spent 25 years in post-secondary education administration and has held increasing levels of leadership over that period. Currently Darren is the Manager, Downtown Development and Innovation at the City of Kitchener.

Darren is a Lean champion who advocates for innovative ideas and enjoys playing a cross-functional role bringing together people, places, and processes.

Erin Poirier, CHRL

Chapter Chair Elect

I am presently the Vice President of Human Resources, Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc.  I have been a member of GVHRPA for over 10 years.  I bring over 12 years of progressive HR experience in the Insurance and Healthcare fields with strengths in leadership, employee relations, and compensation & benefits areas.  I hold a bachelor’s degree from the University of Waterloo, an HR diploma from Humber College, the Certified Human Resources Leader designation from HRPA as well as the Certified Risk Manager Designation. I am currently completing an MBA through the University of Fredericton.

Kathryn-Meehan
Kathryn Meehan, MIR, LLB, LLM

Chapter Secretary/Treasurer

Kathryn Meehan is an employment, labour and human rights lawyer at Hicks Morley. She represents employers before the courts and administrative tribunals. Kathryn advises a variety of public and private sector employers and brings a practical and solution-focused approach to the legal services she provides.

Kathryn graduated as the gold medalist from the LL.B program at UWO and subsequently obtained her LL.M. from the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining Hicks Morley, she completed her Master’s of Industrial Relations at Queen’s University and worked and taught in the field of human resources.

Kathryn is very active in her community having volunteered with the HRPA as a member of the Appeals Committee and as the coordinator of the Employee Relations Peer Networking Group.

Kathryn has also taught at Conestoga College and the University of Waterloo in the human resources management program.

Beatriz-Millon
Beatriz Millon

Chair, Chapter Student Liaison

Beatriz Millon is an innovative and dynamic Human Resources professional with a demonstrated commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and giving back to her community. Presently, she is working towards completing a People Analytics certificate from York University. She holds a Human Resources certificate from Conestoga College and a Management Essentials certificate from Harvard Business School Online. She is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.

Before joining the Board of Directors, she held various volunteer positions from the Human Resources Professionals Association – Grand Valley Chapter, Human Resources Professionals Association, Canadian Cancer Society (Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation), Canadian Red Cross, and Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her close-knit family and staying connected with her long-distance relatives.

Chair, Chapter Communications

Nancy has worked as a Bilingual Human Resources Advisor with the Public Service Alliance of Canada since 2010 and has extensive experience inrecruitment, compensation, job evaluation, employee and labour relations, HRIS design and implementation, health and safety and employment equity.

Nancy graduated with an honours degree from the University of Guelph and went on to obtain a human resources management post-graduate diploma from George Brown College. In addition to her Certified Human Resources Leader designation, she also holds a Certified Compensation Professional designation.

Nancy currently sits on the HRPA Registration Committee. She previously participated on the HRPA Professional Developmental Advisory Panel, Ottawa Chapter Mentoring Committee and was a former member of the Toronto, Kingston and Ottawa HRPA Chapters.
