At the Human Resources Professionals Association, we believe that better HR makes business better. Volunteering

Volunteering at HRPA is a rewarding membership experience and volunteers are critical to the association’s continued success.

With the expertise and involvement of members, we create awareness of workplace issues, promote excellence in human resources management practices and provide services that support the HR community, knowledge-sharing and continuous professional development.

HRPA members and students are involved in a variety of volunteer service opportunities including:

Sherry Patterson
Sherry Patterson, B.A., CHRP

Chapter Chair

Sherry earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Laurentian University and obtained her post-graduate certificate in Human Resources Management from Georgian College. She has a Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification and is a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP).

Sherry has 10+ years of progressive Human Resources experience in several industries including transportation and manufacturing. She has an excellent understanding of provincial and federal labour law, creating policies and procedures, disability management, coaching/counselling, project management and health and safety. Sherry strives to update her knowledge and skills regularly so that she may stay current in all areas of Human Resources.

Sherry has always had a passion for volunteering. She has previously volunteered for Victim Services as a team leader and at the Season Centre for Grieving Children in Barrie.

Chair Elect

Sue is a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) with over 20 years of progressive Human Resources experience. Sue completed her Post Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management through Humber College in Toronto.

Sue’s passion is recruiting, however, does possess many years of HR generalist experience including, but not limited to, Talent Acquisition, International HRM, Employee Relations, Compensation & Benefits and HRIS & Payroll.

Sue is currently working as an HR Manager with Hitachi Rail STS Canada.  Hitachi is currently part of the Mobilinx consortium working to deliver the Hurontario Light Rapid Transit project in Mississauga. Sue has held various roles within HR such as HR Business Partner, Director, Resourcing, Manager, Recruiting, and Human Resources Manager. For many years she worked and built the company & the HR department at Thales Ground Transportation, a large, global hi-tech company.

Sue embraces volunteering and has enjoyed many different volunteer experiences prior to being a member of the Board of Directors of the Barrie & District.

Chair, Chapter Mentorship & Student Liaison

I am a Human Resources professional with five years of experience working both in Canada and abroad. I currently work as a Human Resources Generalist for one of the municipal governments in Ontario.

I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management. As I do consider myself a lifelong learner, I do have several pieces of training in diversity and inclusion, project management, leadership, and employee wellbeing to name a few.

I love to contribute to meaningful causes and be deeply involved with my community. I have served as a PR Officer (Public Relations) for the Nigerian Government agency responsible for environmental sustainability.

In my free time, I love to read, go for long drives, explore nature, and a soccer fan.

Secretary/Treasurer

Sarah is Human Resources professional with over 15 years of progressive experience, currently working in the Healthcare sector she brings experience and relational skills in cultivating cohesive environments that are marked by respect, trust and integrated team relationships.

Sarah holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Laurentian University and post-graduate certificate in Human Resources Management from Georgian College. Sarah is a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) and Registered Professional Recruiter (RPR).

With her experience Sarah is looking forward to contributing to the local HRPA Chapter through stewardship and genuine commitment to helping teams reach success.  She is dedicated to cultivating a safe and unbiased learning environment where all individuals are valued and respected with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Sarah is looking forward to her role on the Board of Director and to be able to provide influence at a sector wide, community and region-based level within the HR profession and within the community in which she is privileged to both work and live in.

Shannon Loughran, B.Comm, CHRL

Chair, Chapter Communications

Shannon Loughran is currently the Director of Human Resources and Corporate Communication in the food service industry.  He has spent the last eight years developing his experience in human resources through a variety of roles with board memberships, executive committees, selection groups, and on executive leadership teams.  Prior to embarking on his professional human resources career, he spent over 10 years working as a project manager for his family business and also spent some time overseas working in corporate training and communications consulting.  Shannon has his CHRL designation and completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree through the University of Guelph and his Post Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management through Conestoga College.

Shannon is looking forward to contributing to the HRPA community.  His unique combination of progressive human resource leadership experience, social and community development, and an educational background focused on business will enable him to affect positive change and continue to be a collaborative leader.

Shannon lives in Barrie with his spouse and two children who all participate in various community events, charities and sports.  Being active and enjoying Barrie’s natural amenities is a passion for Shannon and his family, you will find them enjoying the beaches, waterfront path, bilking/hiking trails, ski hills and sports fields all year long.

Heather Wilson is a Certified Human Resource Leader (CHRL) and obtained her Post Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management from Fleming College and Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto.

Heather is currently the Director of Human Resources & Administration at Oatley Vigmond LLP in Barrie. Her experience in the field of HR spans 20 years and she has held a range of HR positions in a variety of organizations, most recently in the manufacturing industry working for several global corporations.

Heather finds all aspects of the HR field to be both interesting and rewarding. She enjoys the challenges presented by labour relations and negotiations and has become adept at leading change when sides are opposing. Heather thrives in the role of mentor and makes herself available to up-and-coming HR leaders through her involvement with the Worldwide Women’s Association. Heather has travelled abroad extensively and was able to spend two years living in South Korea teaching English when she completed her undergraduate degree.

Married for 27 years to husband Ted, they have enjoyed busy family life with 4 children ranging from ages 13 to 25. An avid sports family, they enjoy hiking, fishing, basketball and are learning to play pickleball on the numerous courts that have popped up in the Barrie area.
