Exams & Prep Programs

​Knowledge exams are designed to validate the candidate's knowledge of human resources and workplace and employment law by testing that knowledge and the ability to apply it (i.e. competency) at three distinct but related levels:

  • an Entry designation (CHRP); 
  • a Professional designation (CHRL);
  • and an Executive designation (CHRE).

Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 / 2 (CKE 1 / CKE 2)​

CKE 1 is a conventional knowledge exam designed to assess the knowledge required to perform at the CHRP level. This relates to the CHRP column in the HR Professional Competency Framework. It consists of 150 multiple-choice questions. 

CKE 2 is a conventional knowledge exam designed to assess the knowledge required to perform at the CHRL level (also satisfies the CKE 1 requirement) and relates to the CHRL column in the HR Professional Competency Framework. It consists of 250 multiple-choice questions and is scored in a non-compensatory manner (applicants must pass every section of the exam). 

CHRP / CHRL Employment Law Exam

The CHRP Employment Law Exam is an application-based knowledge exam for workplace and employment law. It is a multiple-choice exam (approx. 100 questions) which will assess basic knowledge of employment and workplace law in Ontario.

CHRL Performance Exam​

The CHRL Performance Exam will be the final examination required for the CHRL when it comes into effect in 2018 and will be administered upon completion of the Professional Program.

Challenge Exams​

For the purposes of meeting HRPA’s coursework requirement for the CHRP and CHRL designations, an alternative to completing specific course requirements is the Challeng​e Exams. Challenge Exams are designed to assess an applicant’s academic currency in an individual subject area and are similar to a final exam in the subject. They enable an applicant to achieve credit in a required subject area without retaking a course, giving them credit for previous academic or experiential knowledge in a subject.

A note for those pursuing the CHRL
​​CHRL candidates must complete the educational component before writing the CKE2 exam, followed by the professional program. The performance exam will follow completion of the professional program.​
