Computer Based Testing in 2017 – CKE 1 / CKE 2

HRPA has launched computer based testing (CBT) for all exams, including the CKE 1, CKE 2 and the CHRP/CHRL Employment Law exams. Through computer-based testing, HRPA is striving to provide members with a more convenient way to schedule exams, as well as a more secure and rigorous testing technology than traditional paper-based Scantron exams. Our vendor has a well-established track record of experience and success, and is the same vendor that provides SAT testing.

Test-takers will now be able to schedule their exam time within a window of time slots, instead of only on Saturdays. Test periods will take place three times per year instead of two. The exams will still be in the same multiple-choice format as they are now and will be the same degree of difficulty as they are now. Please note that test-takers will still need to complete the exam at a test centre location – the exams are proctored and are offered on a computer.  The new process will involve a simple, three-step registration:

  1. Establish your eligibility with HRPA - must be a member or registrant approved for the public register and have submitted your transcript for review and have met the courework requirement
  2. Register and make payment for the exam with HRPA
  3. Schedule your seat and testing window directly on the exam vendor's site at www.prometric.com/hrpa

differenceCKE 1 or CKE 2: What's the difference?

The CKE 1 is required for the CHRP designation and is valid
only for the CHRP. The CKE 2 is required for the CHRL designation. However, the CKE 2 is valid for both the CHRP and the CHRL designation.

This means:

  • An applicant who successfully completes the CKE 2 and meets the additional requirements  - Employment Law exam and the Job Ready Program will earn the CHRP which they may use while they complete the remaining requirements for the CHRL designation.
  • An applicant who successfully completes the CKE 1 will be required to complete either CHRP or CHRL Employment Law exam in addition to the Job Ready Program to earn the CHRP. If they decide later that they wish to earn the CHRL, they will have to successfully complete the CKE 2 at that time as well as meet any additional requirements for the CHRL designation.

Consult the Designation Requirements and Timetable for more information on the requirement to achieving the CHRP and CHRL designations.

Exam Content and Delivery

The CKE 1  / CKE 2 is based on the HRPA Competency Framework which features nine functional dimensions as it relates to academic knowledge. Academic knowledge refers to basic facts, policies, practices, methods, legislation, etc. It is information that can be written into procedures and transferred fairly accurately during the learning process. Examples of academic knowledge include: the rights and responsibilities of management and labour during union organizing and negotiation processes; the various methods of training and developing staff; and human rights, employment equity and pay equity legislation. The following provides a guideline regarding the extent to which each functional dimension is emphasized within the CKE 1 and CKE 2.
