The Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE 1) is required for the CHRP designation and is
only valid for the CHRP. The CKE 1 comprises 175 multiple-choice questions, 20-30 of which are test questions. The test questions are not scored and are scattered at random throughout the exam. The time allotment for the CKE 1 exam is 3 hours and 30 mins which should give exam-writers plenty of time to complete the exam.
Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE 2) is required for the CHRL designation and it is valid for
both the CHRP and the CHRL. The CKE 2 comprises 250 multiple choice questions, 20-30 of which are test questions. The test questions are not scored and are scattered at random throughout the exam. The time allotment for the CKE 2 exam is 5 hours which should give exam-writers plenty of time to complete the exam.
The CKE 1 and CKE 2 exams will continue to be administered in a computer-based format in approximately twenty-five locations across Ontario. If you need to write your exam outside of the province or country, it is possible as Prometric has a variety of global test centres.

New and Important Note: You will not be permitted to register for the CKE 1 or the CKE 2 exam until such time as HRPA has received your transcript and confirmed your eligibility to write the exam. The coursework requirement consists of successful completion of courses in nine subject areas. Successful completion means obtaining a grade of 70% or better overall in nine subject areas with no single course mark below 65%. Cou rses must be completed within ten years of the date you are registered to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam (CKE 1) or Comprehensive Knowledge Exam (CKE 2) to be considered for eligibility.
Transcript Assessment Form and Fees
Individuals using the course by course method to meet the coursework requirement must submit complete academic transcripts including final grades for all nine required courses. Individuals submitting their first transcript in support of the coursework requirement must complete and submit the
Transcript Assessment Form (PDF) and pay the one-time transcript processing fee of
$75.00 plus HST. This is a one-time fee paid only with the submission of the member's or student's first transcript and will cover the processing of any and all subsequent transcripts.
Transcript Assessment Form (online) can be completed and submitted online. Individuals are still required to submit a transcript including their final grades for all nine required courses by mail to HRPA.
It takes approximately 5-7 business days for transcripts to be assessed. Upon receipt of transcripts for an active member or student registrant, an email confirming receipt of the transcript is sent, and an email is sent once the assessment is complete and the member or student can view the results of the assessment in their online educational record. Once the email has been received that you have met the coursework requirement you can register for the CKE 1 or CKE 2 exam.
Transcripts submitted to HRPA must be the original copy. HRPA does not accept photocopies, electronic copies, web portal downloads, faxed or emailed copies.

coursework requirement before they are eligible to write the CKE 1 or the CKE 2.

The CKE 1 / CKE 2 is based on the
HRPA Competency Framework which features nine functional dimensions as it relates to academic knowledge. Academic knowledge refers to basic facts, policies, practices, methods, legislation, etc. It is information that can be written into procedures and transferred fairly accurately during the learning process. Examples of academic knowledge include: the rights and responsibilities of management and labour during union organizing and negotiation processes; the various methods of training and developing staff; and human rights, employment equity and pay equity legislation. HRPA has developed an
Accommodations Policy to provide reasonable testing accommodations for individuals with documented disabilities. Reasonable accommodation refers to any adjustment to the examination materials or testing environment that permits a qualified applicant with a disability to perform without undue hardship to the institution providing accommodation. Documented disabilities are those for which there is a diagnosis by a qualified professional.
The purpose of accommodations is to provide equity, not advantage. Any requested modification that would substantially alter essential elements of the examination will not be granted.
All requests for withdrawals must be sent to HRPA using the
Exam Withdrawal Form (PDF).
Cancellation and Withdrawal – a cancellation and withdrawal from a scheduled exam is defined as a request to remove your exam registration along with your scheduled appointment date and time from the two week long testing window as you no longer wish to write the exam during that session. You will be required to re-register and make payment to HRPA to take the exam. Withdrawals from the exam are permitted up to 2 calendar days prior to the examination appointment date. All exam withdrawals are subject to a $50.00 administration.
Withdrawals from the exam are not subject to a $50.00 admin fee if done so greater than 29 calendar days from the appointment time
- In certain extenuating circumstances (such as illness or bereavement) the withdrawal fee may be waived at HRPA's discretion. Supporting documentation must be submitted along with a withdrawal form
- Individuals who do not show up for the exam will be considered "no-shows" and will forfeit the full exam fee.
You are encouraged to reschedule or cancel/withdraw from the exam as soon as you know you won't be able to make the appointment as early as possible.
You can reschedule your exam date, appointment time or location within the two week testing window at any time, as long as you do so more than two full calendar days before your scheduled appointment time. However, a $50.00 fee will be charged to you if you reschedule your exam date,time or location less than 29 calendar days of the scheduled appointment. If you wait until you are within two calendar days of your exam appointment time you will forfeit your exam fee. You will be required to pay HRPA to re-register for the exam.

www.prometric.com/hrpa or by contacting Prometric's automated voice response system at: 1- 800-369-6268 (in North America) or by contacting Prometric's Regional Registration centre (outside of North America); the Web is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is no charge for changing an appointment date, time or location if the change is made within 29 calendar days prior to your exam appointment.
CKE 1 and CKE 2 results will be released approximately 4-6 weeks from the end of the testing window. The exact date and time will be communicated to all exam writers via email together with instructions on how to access the results online via their member profile.. HRPA will release exam results via email in the form of a letter. Members and student registrants must also ensure that their email address provider recognizes HRPA as a safe source for emails.
Please do not call the Office of the Registrar asking for results over the phone or for early release. HRPA staff are not allowed to release results over the phone, and HRPA cannot release early results under any circumstances.
