As we embrace Black History month, HRPA would like to acknowledge the rich contributions of Black Canadians and honor their legacy. At HRPA, we believe in and advocate for inclusivity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within Canadian organizations.

Ongoing Challenges for Black Employees

Despite some positive strides, many Black Canadians continue to face significant challenges in their professional lives. A study by KPMG found that over 80% of Black employees reported experiencing racism or microaggressions in the workplace. Such figures serve as a stark reminder that we have much work ahead of us in breaking down systemic barriers and fostering an authentic culture of inclusion.

The Importance of Inclusive Benefits

When we discuss inclusivity, one key area that often comes to mind is the benefits offered to employees — benefits that meet the diverse needs of our workforce. A recent survey by Medavie Blue Cross revealed a staggering 60% of Canadian employees would consider leaving their jobs for positions with more inclusive benefits. This statistic highlights the pressing need for organizations to develop benefits that go beyond surface-level offerings; they must truly support the well-being of all employees. Consider essential elements like mental health resources, flexible work arrangements, and comprehensive health coverage—these are crucial for cultivating a workplace where everyone feels valued and supported.

Looking Ahead: A Continuous Journey

As we honor the countless achievements of Black Canadians, let’s challenge ourselves to commit to ongoing action and strive for a workplace that embraces inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.
