Alternate Route for Coursework Requirement

HRPA has developed an Alternate Route to meeting the coursework requirement. The Alternate Route is intended for individuals with advanced HR education or experienced HR professionals. To provide the greatest flexibility, a points-based system was developed that gives ‘points’ for experience, formal training, coursework, and other relevant designations.

Fifty points are needed to pass the Alternate Route and qualify for the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam (CKE 1 or CKE 2). Applicants are encouraged to also review the Guide to the Alternate Route (PDF).

Those going through the Alternate Route academic stream are not required to submit a  Transcript Assessment Form and can submit their application at any time; however to be considered for eligibility to write the next sitting of the CKE 1 or CKE 2 the application must be submitted prior to the CKE 1 or CKE 2 registration deadline dates. Processing the Alternate Route academic stream applications can take up to a week or so as it is a manual process.

*Upon requesting a degree assessment report from WES, an e-report (electronic report) is automatically generated in addition to a hard copy. Once the assessment is complete, HRPA is notified by WES and is able to access the e-report. HRPA will accept the degree assessment in this format instead of requiring applicants to submit the hard copy of the report. The HRPA will also accept hard copy reports from WES.

Please note that this is only an option through WES, and not through CES or ICAS at this time.

For more information on this process, please contact WES directly using the contact information above.

Alternate Route Application - Experience (PDF)

Stream 2 applications are reviewed by a panel of HRPA's Experience Assessment Committee.  The deadlines for submission of applications are the last business day of each month  and results are released 6 – 8 weeks after the submission deadline.

Stream 2 applications do not require a Transcript Assessment Form and can be submitted for any of the submission deadline dates, however to be considered for eligibility to write the next sitting of the CKE 1 or CKE 2 the application must be submitted approximately three months before the CKE 1 or CKE 2 registration deadline dates. The CKE 1 or CKE 2 registration deadline dates can be found on Important Dates.

Why have an Alternate Route?
The Alternate Route is intended for individuals with advanced HR education or experienced HR professionals. A points-based system gives ‘points’ for experience, formal training, coursework, and other relevant designations.

How long is the Alternate Route result valid?

In order for a member to be eligible to write the CKE 1 or CKE 2, the coursework requirement must be met and must be current at the time the exam is taken. This means that if it takes a member more than one try to successfully complete the CKE 1 or CKE 2, they must ensure that their Alternate Route result is still valid:

  • As noted above, courses taken towards meeting the coursework requirement are valid for ten years from the date they were completed.

  • Other HR designations submitted in support of an Alternate Route application must be current.

  • The result of an assessment of professional level HR experience submitted in support of an Alternate Route application is valid for two years from the date of the result. After two years, the member will be asked to meet the recency requirement again (providing proof of a minimum of three months’ HR experience at a professional level in the previous two years).

  • An advanced degree submitted in support of an Alternate Route application is valid indefinitely.

Alternate Route and the CHRL Professional Experience Requirement

Both the Alternate Route and the Validation of Experience give credit for experience. The definition and criteria for experience are the same in the Alternate Route and the Validation of Experience. This means that if  the result of an Alternate Route application is that an individual is deemed to have three or more years of experience in HR at a professional level (including at least three months in the previous two years), this person will also have been deemed to have met the experience requirement. For someone with three or more years of experience in HR at a professional level, it is possible to meet the coursework requirement and the experience requirement at the same time. Please review the Alternate Route application for the definition of ‘professional level’ experience and the scope of HR management.

All Alternate Route applications should be submitted to:
