Volunteering

Volunteering at HRPA is a rewarding membership experience and volunteers are critical to the association’s continued success.

With the expertise and involvement of members, we create awareness of workplace issues, promote excellence in human resources management practices and provide services that support the HR community, knowledge-sharing and continuous professional development.

Dr. Carol Ann Samhaber

Chapter Chair

Carol Ann is a full-time Professor and Academic Coordinator responsible for the Business Administration Human Resources Advanced Diploma and Human Resources Management Graduate Certificate Algonquin College School of Business.

She holds a Doctor of Education, having completed doctoral research centred on Canadian college faculty teaching and learning professional development. She also holds a Master of Science. Carol Ann possesses several professional designations, including a Registered Professional Recruiter, Registered Professional Trainer, Certified Human Resources Leader, Chartered Professional in Human Resources, Global Professional Human Resources, and Society of Human Resource Managers-Senior Certified Professional. She is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of the Human Resources Professional Association Ottawa.

Her professional passion is human resources management, fields she regards as central to both organizational strategic success and operational best practices. “I really do view human resources as essential to an organization’s success – and an effective means to safeguard stakeholders’ best interests, whether it’s the employee, the organization, or the broader community.” Carol Ann is devoted to her teaching, whether developing courses and student assessment strategies, or advising students. “It is a privilege to prepare students for their careers as well as becoming proactive members of their communities.”

Most recently, Carol Ann is the co-author with Joseph Martocchio of a book entitled Canadian Edition Strategic Compensation: A Human Resource Management Approach that maps out the strategic significance and application of employee compensation. The book is due to be published 2020-2021 by Pearson Publishing. She has also written an online employee recruitment and selection simulation designed for Canadian colleges and universities.

Cheryl Banks, CPA, CMA, has years of experience working for best managed companies and partnering with top tier clients in both the private and public sector to recruit professionals for both contract and full-time positions. She has been the Treasurer for the Human Resources Professional Association Ottawa Chapter (HRPA-Ottawa) for the past three years and an Allied member of HRPA.

Sarah Eaton is a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) with 8+ years of HR experience in the technology sector. Sarah is an dynamic, bilingual HR Consultant who coaches and advises business managers and senior leaders. Currently working with Adobe, Sarah has lived in Ottawa, New York City and Sydney, Australia. Her passion is Employee Relations and currently supports Canada, the United States and Latin America. Personally, Sarah enjoys travel and has been fortunate to visit over 35 countries to date.

Maurice Le Maire

Chapter Secretary/Treasurer

A Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL), Maurice has over 15 years of HR leadership experience globally, in diverse industries (consulting, technology, manufacturing, retail, sales and services and public sector) for Fortune ranked companies, and Canadian top 100 employers. His focus are Employee & Labour Relations, Talent Management and HR Transformation.

Perfectly tri-lingual (French, English and Spanish), he positions himself as a resource to people, enabling their contributions by creating strong relationships, developing and coaching talent as well as finding efficiencies an strategies that add long term value. He holds a B.Comm from the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, and a certificate in Industrial Relations from Université Laval.

Classically trained pianist, Maurice serves as well in different boards in the arts and classical music industry. After devoting time to his family, the “Dad of 3” can be found sitting at his piano, jogging outside or playing basketball.

MacKenzie Smith

Chair, Chapter Mentorship Committee

MacKenzie has focused her career on the technology side of HR. She has experience working with a number of different HR Information and Management Systems. In her current role as an HR Analyst at Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions, she has been able to pursue her passion for the emerging field of People Analytics.

MacKenzie holds a B.Com. from the University of Ottawa, majoring in Management Information Systems and Analytics, as well as an advanced diploma in Business Administration from Algonquin College, majoring in Human Resources Management. She is a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) with the HRPA and is Certified in Management (C.I.M.) with the Canadian Institute of Management. Prior to joining the Ottawa HRPA Board of Directors, MacKenzie volunteered on the Mentoring Committee and at the Annual HRPA Conference and Trade Show for three years.

Karley Paulin

Chair, Chapter Programs/Professional Development Committee

Karley is a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL), with a graduate degree in Industrial Relations (MIR), and degrees in Biology and Psychology. Karley has focused her career on public sector labour relations and currently works in Labour Relations at the City of Ottawa. Karley has been an active volunteer with the Ottawa Chapter since 2013, having led both the Student Liaison and Regulatory Committees.

Chair, Chapter Communications Committee

Jacqueline Boudreau is a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) with a Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences (Psychology). Jacqueline is currently working as a Staffing Advisor in the Government of Canada and enjoys yoga in her free time.

Chair, Chapter Regulatory Liaison Committee

Gina Maddalena has over 15 years of progressive human resources management experience in both the private, public and not-for-profit sectors and holds the CHRL designation. Having worked in several diverse industries including information technology, manufacturing, consulting and education, Gina has a variety experience in HR functions , with  passion for HR Systems, Total Rewards and Recruitment . She is currently the Director,  Human Resources Manager Sustainable Development Technology Canada.

When Gina takes time away from volunteering with the Ottawa Chapter of the HRPA and the Ottawa Regional Rewards Association, you can find her on the water paddling in Dragon Boat festivals.

Vanessa Herman is a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL). She holds a BA and MA in Political Science with a focus on international development and a graduate certificate in Human Resources Management. A true “people person”, Vanessa has focused her career on employee engagement, labour relations, and relationship management. Building on her extensive professional experience in the non-profit sector, Vanessa is currently the Human Resources Manager for the Ottawa Humane Society.
