HRPA Halton President's Message Archive

December 2017

Dear Halton Chapter Members,

The Holiday Season is upon us! Our Holiday Chapter event on December 5th was a huge success!  We had the pleasure of having Donna Brown teach us about micro-expressions and applying those principles in our HR activities.  We had the opportunity to network while enjoying a delicious meal with our colleagues and friends.  In addition, the opportunity to donate to 2 worthy charities – The Halton Women's Place and Food For Life – was made available.

gifts2Through the generous sponsorship of Elby Professional Recruitment, we were able to offer 10 very nice door prizes.  Through the members attending the event, raffle tickets were purchased for a chance to win those prizes.  All proceeds from the door prize raffle were donated to Halton Women's Place.  The total donations raised were $714.  The Halton Women's Place will use those funds to purchase gift cards for their client and will be given to the women and children that find refuge and support through the Halton Women's Place. They sent us a thank you email for your generous support.

gifts1At our registration table, boxes were provided to hold the non-perishable foods brought for donation to Food for Life.  Based on the weight of the food donated, the members that attended the event provided 108 meals for adults and children in the Halton Region who are in need.  Wow!! That is quite an impact.

Thank-you all for your generous donations to these charities.

Thank-you for your continuous support of the Halton Chapter.  It's because of YOU that our events are so successful in so many ways.

On behalf of the Halton Board of Directors, I'd like to wish you all the happiest of Holidays, and a prosperous 2018.

Lynn Besse

President, Halton Chapter HRPA

September 2017

On behalf of the Halton Chapter Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome you (our member) to the upcoming 2017/18 programming year.  I have recently been acclaimed into the President role of the Halton Chapter.  I am very excited to be part of this Chapter and to lead the team of Directors that will provide various professional development experiences for you.  I look forward to meeting you at our upcoming events.  Please feel free to introduce yourself as well.

For the 2016/17 Membership year, our Chapter was recognized for our achievement and excellence in Retention.  Your participation in the 2017 Annual Satisfaction Survey gave us valuable information to consider for the upcoming year. Thank you all for your continued contributions to our Chapter and your feedback so we can continuously improve our value-add programming.

Our goal is to serve your needs and add value to your career as a Human Resource professional. We are committed to hosting a wide range of professional development speakers that engage and educate, as well as mentoring and networking opportunities.

Professional Development for our members continues to be an area in which the Board places high importance.  We endeavour to provide our membership with as many complimentary events as possible however with the growing interest and attendance, and the rising costs to produce an event (venue, meals, and audio-visual), we can no longer offer full complimentary events for our members.  As non-profit organizations, this current challenge is seen across all 27 Ontario Chapters and each will need to reconsider how their events will be supported.

To meet this mandate, starting this Program year (September 2017), members will see that event registration costs will be free for a pre-determined number of registrants, then a charge will be applied for registrants once the cap is met.   For the September 12th event, we have budget for 100 members complimentary, then a $45.00 fee for HRPA members and $55.00 fee for non-members. Our Chapter will continue to look for best ways to provide the best price to you.

Our Board is working through this year's Program schedule.  Our goal is to provide a schedule for the full 2017/18 Program year within the next few months.  Hard copy brochures will be mailed to your home (check your HRPA profile to verify you have the correct mailing address) for your convenience, as well as a PDF file posted on our Chapter site.  Although the full year's Program schedule will be visible on the Program's page of our Chapter site, registration will be available for events 2 months in advance.  We aim to provide as much advance notice and information to members as possible, and hope you will take advantage of early registration to secure your complementary attendance.

CANCELLATION POLICY:   All cancellation requests must be received in writing to Eva Vanags at least 72 hours in advance of the registered event. Registrants that do not attend the event or do not provide 72 hours advance notice of cancellation will be subject to a cancellation fee. This fee will align with registration fee, $45.00, however it may be subject to change based on the break-even cost by event. The full Cancellation Policy will be posted on the Chapter site shortly.

Our Board of Directors is excitedly preparing for the upcoming year.  In addition to me as a new Board Member, we also have Sofia Lombo and Rabi Abraham as our Membership and Employment Networking Directors respectively.  Eva Vanags, Nadia Jamal, Carmela Sanders and Juliana Tu are continuing their term with us as Secretary, Program Director, Mentorship Director and Communications Director respectively.  We have 1 vacancy on our Board - Treasurer - and welcome any interest from you.  Further details about the position can be found on our Chapter Governance page by clicking "Chapter Elections".  If you wish to contact me directly, I am happy to speak with you and review the responsibilities of the position. I can be reached at

In addition, the Halton HRPA Chapter is currently seeking volunteers for our Membership Committee. This position will report directly to the Membership Director and will be responsible for attracting and retaining Chapter members. You will greet new members at chapter meetings and introduce them to existing members to shadow at first meeting. You will follow up by phone and email with new and existing members to ensure they have had the opportunity to attend a Halton Chapter meeting within the last 12 months. Please apply by emailing:

We are committed to continue to provide value-add programming and we look forward to another productive year ahead.

Thank you.

Lynn Besse, President
