At the Human Resources Professionals Association, we believe that better HR makes business better. Volunteering

Volunteering at HRPA is a rewarding membership experience and volunteers are critical to the association’s continued success.

With the expertise and involvement of members, we create awareness of workplace issues, promote excellence in human resources management practices and provide services that support the HR community, knowledge-sharing and continuous professional development.

HRPA members and students are involved in a variety of volunteer service opportunities including:

Gladys Saenz

Chapter Chair

Gladys is strategic results-oriented Human Resources leader with solid experience and background in diverse industries who has served in senior roles in both the private and public sectors including in unionized environments.

She is motivated and resourceful but also a catalyst for positive change creating progressive work environments to inspire superior performance from all team members.

A strong collaborator with superior analytical skills, Gladys possesses a unique style to solve difficult and complex challenges in a diverse group.  She has a passion for learning, which combined, with her extensive knowledge of all the HR functional areas, Payroll and Health and Safety, have been instrumental in her career progression.  She has competently developed comprehensive HR strategies and executable operational plans to meet organizational objectives.

Gladys has been a member of the Durham Chapter Board of Directors since 2017.  She is eager to continue serving the Board and the chapter members.

Hazel-Ann Langlois, CHRL

Chair, Chapter Programs

Hazel has been a member of the HRPA since 2014 and a volunteer at the Durham Chapter since 2017. In her professional life, Hazel is currently working for a Global HVAC & Energy Company as a Sr. HR Generalist with a new focus on Learning and Development. She has been in the HR field since 2012 and has spent time in various functions of HRM including strategic recruitment, training and development, labour and employee relations, and project management. Since 2017, her time spent at the Durham Chapter has been with the Professional Development committee and she has been a part of bringing engaging speakers and relevant content to our chapter. When she is not at work or volunteering, Hazel enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

Ernest Mistica
Ernest Mistica, CHRP, CHRL, MIR

Chair, Chapter Mentorship & Chair, Chapter Student Liaison

Ernest Mistica works at Ontario Power Generation (OPG) as a Manager, Compensation and Job Evaluation and is currently the HRPA Durham Chapter Board Member for Mentorship and Student Affairs. At OPG, Ernest manages enterprise Org Design & Job Evaluation plans, programs and processes. Prior to joining the the Job Evaluation team, he worked as an HR Consultant supporting Corporate Groups. Before moving to Durham, Ernest worked at Bell as an HR Consultant (Network & IT) and started his HR career as an HR New Grad with PepsiCo Canada in progressive roles in generalist, talent acquisition, and talent management roles. After completing his Bachelor of Commerce in HR and Marketing at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), Ernest completed his Master of Industrial Relations (MIR) at Queen’s University and attained the CHRL and CHRP designations.

Peggy Ly
Peggy Ly

Communications Lead

Peggy Ly has been volunteering with the Durham Chapter Communications Committee since 2019 and currently works as a Senior HR Coordinator. With several years of work experience from manufacturing, banking, and energy industries, her main responsibilities include providing HR services to all staff, recruitment, labour relations, and payroll. With a strong passion for learning, Peggy has completed a Diploma in Business Administration specializing in Human Resources from Seneca College, and a Bachelor of Commerce from York University. Currently, she holds a CHRP designation and is working on completing the CHRL certification in the fall.

Marcia Newell
Marcia Newell

Secretary/Treasurer

After graduating from York University and fulfilling the professional requirements for the Human Resources Professional designation in Ontario, Marcia was fortunate to work as part of some amazing executive teams within a variety of disparate industries, including digital marketing, technology, construction and non-for-profit/healthcare. Specifically, Marcia’s passion for supporting staff and evolving human resource practices has blended experiences in all aspects of staff development and corporate progression. Previous volunteer experiences include almost 20 years in Girl Guides of Canada, coaching soccer, and participating as a Board member (Communications Committee co-chair) for the HRPA of Durham Region.

In her current position in a children’s treatment centre in Durham Region, Marcia is honoured to belong to a strong leadership unit that bolsters a dedicated team of professionals to have the tools, resources and support to make a difference in the lives of the children and families of Durham Region. Marcia’s Deliberate Leadership Presence Statement is “to highlight the best in myself and those around me through fostering joy, kindness and ethical philosophies; to, with intention, nurture supportive relationships and an atmosphere of balance, trust and respect.”

Off hours are spent in time with family, baking, DIY projects, sometimes even successful ones, adventures in cottage country, and singing at full volume to favourite songs on the radio while driving.

Nancy Brickwood

Chair, Chapter Programs

Nancy is an accomplished and versatile Human Resources Leader with broad experience across all the talent disciplines. Nancy has been an advisor and partner to Senior Executive teams on a range of human capital challenges including business transformation, operating model changes, M&A activity, DEI and ESG. She has also had the privilege of leading both Canadian and Global HR/L&D teams. Nancy is skilled at developing and implementing creative and pragmatic talent strategies. She is passionate about cultivating strong leadership throughout a company. Recently Nancy led successful initiatives in Mental Health and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion resulting in industry acknowledgement. Nancy has been a member of the Durham Chapter for over 20 years. She has her CHRE and CHRL designations along with a B.A. from Wilfrid Laurier University and a diploma in HR Management from the University of Toronto. Nancy is excited to be joining the Durham Chapter Board of Directors and hopes to bring her experiences and perspectives to this opportunity.
