One must be a member of HRPA to write the National Knowledge Exam, to have one’s experience validated towards achieving the experience requirement, and to apply for certification related processes such as the Alternate Route or the Approval of Non-Approved courses.
The requirement that membership in HRPA be required in order to obtain and maintain the C.H.R.P. designation follows directly from the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario Act, 1990. Section 7(2) of the Act states: “Any person in Ontario who, not being a registered member of the Association, takes or uses the designation of "Certified Human Resources Professional" or its abbreviation "CHRP" alone or in combination with any other words, name, title or description or implies, suggests or holds out that the person is a certified human resources professional is guilty of an offence.”
Unlike other credentials such as degrees, professional designations require that the regulatory body have on-going jurisdiction over its members. HRPA members are bound by HRPA’s Code of Ethics and HRPA’s Rules of Professional Conduct and are subject to discipline by the Association. This is the rationale that is embedded in law.
Once begun, individuals must maintain continuous membership with HRPA until the certification process is complete. Individuals who lapse their HRPA membership while their certification process is still in progress may be required to pay back dues to get their certification process back on track, or to go back and re-start some of the processes required for certification.
Individuals who become certified are required to maintain membership in order to retain the right to hold the designation. Certified individuals who lapse their membership will be required to pay back dues or to start the certification process again in accordance with the Membership Continuity Policy.
Please be advised that a copy of grades, transcripts or student confirmation information may be required to be granted membership in a particular category. Copies will be accepted for membership purposes only. The Office of the Registrar will not accept copies of transcripts or grades for certification related purposes. Original transcripts must be sent to the Office of the Registrar for assessment towards meeting the coursework requirement, alternate route applications containing educational courses, and approval of non approved courses applications.
