NKE and the Degree Requirement

Please be advised, proof of a completed degree (under the HRPA degree requirement conditions) is not required in order to be eligible to write the NKE. Individuals are required to me members, to meet the coursework requirement and to register by the NKE registration deadline in order to be eligible to write the NKE. The degree requirement is however part of the total requirements in order to achieve the designation. Proof of a completed degree, that meets the conditions of the HRPA degree requirement, must be provided to HRPA, in addition to meeting the experience requirement, within 5 years of passing the NKE. Individuals with questions regarding the degree requirement should contact the Office of the Registrar at registrar@hrpa.ca

NKE Registration vs. Eligibility

Registration for the NKE does not constitute eligibility to write. HRPA requires original transcripts to be submitted before or at the time of NKE registration. Assessment of transcripts takes approximately four to six weeks. Individuals who are attempting to meet the coursework requirement via the alternate route, must apply for the alternate route in advance of the NKE registration deadline. See the alternate route section of the website for more information. Individuals who have not yet received a decision regarding their application before the registration deadline, must also register for the NKE by the deadline. For individuals who are unsuccessful on their alternate route application, their NKE registration fees will be refunded.

Individuals who are deemed eligible to write will receive an "Authorization to Write Letter" by email approximately three weeks prior to the NKE.  Individuals who register for the NKE under the conditions of the late transcript policy and who are deemed eligible will receuve an "Authorization to Write Letter" by email approximately one week prior to the NKE.

Transcript Assessment

Individuals using the course by course method to meet the coursework requirement must submit complete academic transcripts, including final grades for all 9 course requirements. Transcripts must arrive at HRPA before or on the registration deadline date.  HRPA will not accept applications and transcripts that arrive after the deadline, including those that have been mailed before the deadline.

Members are encouraged to submit transcripts to the association as soon as they complete each required course.  HRPA tracks a member's progress in meeting the coursework requirement in our membership database. National Knowledge Exam registrants must submit transcripts before or at the time of registration.

Transcripts must be original documents. Photocopies, web printouts and faxes will not be accepted as offical documentation.  Transcripts may be fowarded to HRPA directly by an educational institution at the request of a member, however members are responsible for ensuring that the correct surname appears on the transcript so it can be matched to the member's profile.

Individuals who are unable to submit original transcripts at the time of registration for the National Knowledge Exam or who have courses in progress, may be able to utilize HRPA's Late Transcript Policy. View the Office of the Registrar Policies section of the website for specific details.

It takes approximately 4-6 weeks for transcripts to be assessed.  Upon receipt of transcripts for an active member, an email confirming receipt of the transcripts is sent, and an email is sent once the assessment is complete and the member can view the results of the assessment in their online educational record.

Individuals applying to write the NKE are not eligible to write simply by registering and paying.  Only those that meet the coursework requirement will be deemed eligible to write.

Individuals applying via the alternate route to meet the coursework requirement must apply in advance of registering to write the NKE.  See the alternate route section of this website for more information.

Original transcripts for active members can be mailed or couriered to:
