PLEASE NOTE
Part-time Student Membership Category Discontinued

The Part-time Student HRPA membership category has been discontinued, effective with the 2012 membership year.

Only individuals who are employed in HR while taking courses toward their CHRP designations were technically eligible for membership in the Part-time Student category. This description -- "employed in HR and working toward the CHRP" -- is identical to the Practitioner membership category, including the same fees and member benefits. Therefore, HRPA has decided these members should be considered to be Practitioner category members.

Individuals who are employed outside of HR, whether they are taking HR courses or not, will be eligible for membership as General category members.

If you have any questions or concerns about this change, please contact Dino Falvo, Director, Membership and Chapter Relations.

Practitioner*:

A Practitioner Member is a human resources practitioner who is working towards, or has attained, the association’s academic requirements for the CHRP designation. The academic requirements must be achieved within the time period prescribed by the HRPA Board of Directors.

Full-Time Student*:

A Full-Time Student Member is taking a minimum of three concurrent HRPA-approved courses in human resources management in a post-secondary diploma or degree program, and is not employed on a full- or part-time basis in human resources.

General:

A General Member is interested in the practice of human resources: lawyer, specialist, consultant, retiree, academic, line manager, or others who do not qualify for other categories.

HR IEP (Internationally Educated HR Professional)

An HR IEP member qualifies for special, reduced-fee one-year memberships if they have: (a) Obtained their professional education or professional experience from an accredited academic institution or an analogous corporate body outside the boundaries of Canada, (b) Worked in human resources in a professional capacity for two of the past 5 years, and (c) Obtained permanent residency status in Canada within the past 24 months.

Allied Professional

An Allied Professional member may join HRPA in this special, reduced-fee member category if they belong to a Fair Access to Regulated Professions Act (FARPA) Schedule 1 profession in Ontario such as CGAs, CMAs, lawyers or engineers. HRPA membership can make you a better manager by building your HR knowledge so you make informed workplace decisions leading to higher employee engagement and productivity.

* Proof of registration or completion of the approved courses – in the form of an ORIGINAL grade report or transcript – must be included with your membership application.

Career Bridging/Reduced Dues

If you require help with your current membership dues, you may qualify for HRPA’s Reduced Dues.

There are special reduced dues provisions for members who are retired, unemployed, on disability or educational leave and or maternity leave.

Do I qualify for Reduced Dues?

Members may apply for reduced dues status if they are a current HRPA member and unemployed, or on maternity, educational or disability leave. The member may also apply if they are on contract/temporary employment as long as the work does not exceed six months total within the membership year and their annual income does not exceed $18,000. Members who qualify will be eligible for reduced dues for a maximum of two consecutive years within a five-year time period.

If the member wishes to apply/renew under the reduced dues status, they must provide HRPA with: the career bridging/reduced dues application form, proof of status and payment.

Proof of Status

Proof of status accepted by HRPA includes: an employment insurance (EI) claim or Record of Employment (ROE) or a letter from your employer if you are on educational leave or part-time employment. Your Social Insurance Number may be blacked out.

Return to Work

Reduced dues status expires when you return to full-time employment. You must notify Membership Services within 30 days of your return. You will be invoiced at the lesser of a) a full-year membership fee less the reduced dues fee, or b) membership at the regular rate, but on a pro-rated basis from the month of your return to full-time work.

Application for reduced dues for second consecutive year

Members applying for reduced dues status for a second consecutive year will be required to submit a copy of their T4 or T4A for the most recent tax year along with their application. The career bridging/reduced dues are subject to chapter fees and applicable taxes. Schedule of the reduced Chapter dues and links to application and renewal form for retired status follow.
